What is a Paragraph?

Simply put, a paragraph is a group of related sentences that support one main idea or topic.

A paragraph is an organized group of sentences or ideas that is coherent and serves as a fundamental building block of written communication. Typically, a paragraph begins with an indented first line, known as an indentation, to visually separate it from surrounding paragraphs. Alternatively, a new paragraph may start on a new line without indentation.

For BLE and SEE purposes, the length of a paragraph may be 4-6 sentences in paragraph writing. But in essay writing, a paragraph is usually composed of several sentences (ranging from 3-6) that support and expand upon the central idea. Effective paragraphs are well-structured, logically connected, and provide clear and concise information to the reader.

Parts of a Paragraph

#1 Topic Sentence

A topic sentence highlights the one main idea of a paragraph, letting the reader know what the paragraph will be about.
A topic sentence answers the WHAT.

#2 Supporting Sentences

Supporting sentences give more information about the TOPIC SENTENCE. They are either facts, descriptions, explanations, or personal examples or experiences.
Supporting sentences answer the WHY, HOW, WHO, WHOM, WHERE.

#3 CLosing Sentence

An closing/ending sentence highlights the one main idea of a paragraph by reminding the reader about the main idea.
